Why Awareness Training Is a Legal Requirement

Under ADR chapter 1.3, everyone whose duties concern the carriage of dangerous goods by road must be trained in the requirements that apply to their role. Until they are trained, they may only carry out those duties under the direct supervision of a trained person.

That applies far beyond drivers. Warehouse staff, packers, loaders, dispatch teams and the office staff who prepare transport documents all need training. It is separate from the ADR driver certificate, and it applies even if you only ship limited quantities.

The Three Parts of ADR 1.3 Training

ADR sets out what the training must cover.
Our course is built around all three parts.

Part 1

General Awareness

The general requirements of the regulations: what dangerous goods are, the hazard classes, and how ADR fits together.

Part 2

Function-Specific

The detailed requirements for each person's job, whether that's packing, labelling, loading or completing documents.

Part 3

Safety

The hazards and dangers of the goods, safe handling, and what to do in an emergency or after an incident.

We also cover security awareness, which ADR chapter 1.10 requires for everyone involved in carrying dangerous goods.

Who Needs It?

  • Warehouse, yard and stores staff
  • Packers, loaders and unloaders
  • Dispatch, shipping and goods-in teams
  • Office staff who classify goods or prepare transport documents
  • Drivers carrying dangerous goods below the ADR 1.1.3.6 thresholds
  • Staff shipping limited or excepted quantities
  • Supervisors and managers responsible for these teams

Drivers carrying loads above the thresholds need a full ADR driver certificate instead.

What's Covered

  • ADR and CDG regulations, and your legal duties
  • Classification and the nine hazard classes
  • UN numbers, packaging and packing groups
  • Marking and labelling of packages
  • Transport documents
  • Limited quantities, excepted quantities and exemptions
  • Safe loading, segregation and load security
  • Vehicle placarding
  • Spills, leaks and emergency response
  • Security awareness

Training Records That Stand Up

ADR requires the employer to keep records of the training each person has received, and to make them available to the employee or the competent authority on request.

Training must also be refreshed periodically to take account of changes in the regulations. ADR is updated every two years, so many businesses refresh on the same cycle.

Every delegate receives a training record, so you have evidence ready if an enforcement officer, auditor or customer asks.

  • Every roleTraining matched to each person's duties
  • Every 2 yearsADR updates, and a sensible refresher cycle
